Sow's Milk Paste

Three drugs ground together and carried into the baby's mouth on sow's milk. The milk itself is inert — it is a vehicle, chosen because a newborn will take it and because the text reads the sow as a cool, quieting animal — and nothing in this note is a warning about milk. Amber and saposhnikovia are likewise mild. The cinnabar is not. Five fun of it goes into a dose of 1 ja given to a baby in its first month, for crying. Crying at night in an otherwise well, growing baby is infantile colic: it begins in the first weeks, peaks at about six weeks, is worst in the evening, and resolves by three or four months whatever is done. Nothing treats it reliably. Giving a sedating mineral nightly to such a baby is the sharpest example in this chapter of a harmless condition met with a harmful remedy. **Contains cinnabar, which is mercuric sulfide — mercury. There is no safe dose at any age, the developing nervous system is the organ at risk, and the injury does not reverse.
