Translation

Treats a pile sore swollen and painful so that one can neither sit nor lie, where no medicine answers; only this is excellent, and one dab sets it right. Eight or nine large river snails: prick open the lid of each, put in a little powdered alum, set them on the ground with the pointed ends buried in the earth and the lids facing the sky, and leave overnight. Next day take the liquid that has gathered on the lids and paint it on the piles with a fowl's feather five to seven times, and it disperses. — Jonghaeng 種杏 (Donguibogam · Hueum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Alum put into a live snail overnight draws out a liquid that is mucin with alum dissolved in it — a slippery astringent. The elaborate burial is about keeping the shells upright so the liquid collects where it can be taken. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
