Translation

Treats a screen and membrane. Cinnabar water-levigated 2 don; borax 1 don 5 pun; twenty-one prinsepia seeds worked to a paste; pearl and calcined gypsum half a don each; bear gall 2 pun 5 ri; musk 1 pun. Grind to a fine powder, work in good honey, steam in a pan until sticky, and store in an earthen jar. For use, thin a little with an ash-bark decoction and dot it at the inner corner with a copper rod; the tears running is the sign of effect. — Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Pearl and calcined gypsum ground to a powder fine enough for the eye — the abrasive principle made explicit, since a screen was understood as something to be polished away. Applied at the inner corner rather than on the cornea, which spares the surface the grinding. **Contains cinnabar, bear gall and musk, placed on the eye. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
