Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治大便不通. 草烏爲極細末, 葱白 一枚, 切去根, 其頭上有汁, 濕蘸草烏末, 納肛門中卽通. ○卽霹靂箭, 能治大小便不通. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats the stool not passing. Grind wild aconite to a very fine powder; take one scallion white, cut off the root, and with its moist head dip it in the aconite powder and insert it into the anus — it passes at once. This is the thunderbolt arrow, and it can treat both passages not passing. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A suppository, and the chapter's best idea in this section: the scallion white is the vehicle and its own moisture carries the powder, which the physician never has to handle wet. Insertion of anything into the rectum will provoke a reflex evacuation, so the method works whatever the drug does; wild aconite is a mucosal irritant and toxic, and the method would be better without it. The name — thunderbolt arrow — is the most memorable in the chapter. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
