Aster Decoction

紫菀湯

Cut and made into one packet with a lump of bamboo shavings the size of a hen's egg, decocted in water and strained; half a spoonful of honey is stirred in, brought to a boil once more, and taken warm. Note on modern practice: cough in pregnancy that is persistent or accompanied by fever warrants medical evaluation.

Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治姙娠咳嗽, 胎不安. 紫菀ㆍ天門冬各二錢, 桔梗一錢半, 杏仁ㆍ桑白皮ㆍ甘草各一錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 入竹茹鷄子大, 水煎去滓, 入蜜半匙, 再一沸, 溫服. 《綱目》

Translation

Treats coughing in pregnancy with the fetus unquiet. Aster and asparagus root, 2 don each; platycodon 1.5 don; apricot kernel, mulberry root bark, and licorice, 1 don each. Cut the above, make one packet, add bamboo shavings the bulk of a hen's egg, decoct in water and strain; stir in half a spoonful of honey, bring to a boil once more, and take warm. — Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Buin)
