Translation

Treats a violent diarrhoea with the whole body in cold sweat, a sunken faint pulse, and qi too scant for speech; with vomiting added it is a critical illness. Prepared pinellia, 2 nyang; blast-fried dried ginger, cassia bark, blast-fried aconite and roasted licorice, 5 don each; lesser galangal, 2.5 don. Coarsely powdered; take 5 don each time in two cups of water decocted down to one, hot and on an empty stomach. — Yeokro 易老 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The chapter's emergency, and the signs are described with real precision: cold sweat over the whole body, a pulse sunken and faint, too little breath to speak, and vomiting if it is worse. That is hypovolaemic shock, and the Yeokro calls it a critical illness in those words. The prescription is the whole warm pharmacy at once — aconite, dried ginger, cassia, galangal — to hold a collapsing yang, which is the correct instinct with the wrong means. What the patient needs is fluid and salt; the Sweet Dew Drink a few sections earlier would have served better, and the chapter does not connect the two. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
