Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water and take on an empty stomach. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The chapter's standard for cold diarrhoea, and the construction is orthodox: the aconite and ginger pair at the head for the cold, the Four Gentlemen beneath for the vacuity, aromatics to keep the warming from becoming stagnant. The sign that justifies it is undigested food in the stool, which the tradition reads as a failure of the spleen's transforming fire. In modern terms that is steatorrhoea or rapid transit; the formula will not correct either, but the pattern it names — cold, painful, undigested — is one that genuinely responds to warming. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
