Translation

Treats diarrhoea with poor appetite. Glutinous rice, one seung, steeped in water overnight, drained dry, slow-fried until thoroughly done and ground fine; add 1 nyang of dioscorea powder and a little black pepper powder, and mix evenly. Each day at dawn take half a cup, stir in two spoonfuls of sugar, and take it made up with boiling water. The taste is excellent and it nourishes and supplements greatly. Lotus seed and gorgon nut powder added are better still. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A food rather than a medicine, and the chapter is honest about it: toasted glutinous rice flour with dioscorea, a little pepper and sugar, taken as a gruel at dawn. The indication is the one that matters after a long diarrhoea — the patient is not eating — and the answer is something palatable and caloric that will not provoke the bowel. The Uigam's note that the taste is excellent is doing real clinical work. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
