Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治寒盛泄瀉不止, 腸鳴腹痛, 手足厥冷, 脉微弱. 硫黃(生硏) 三兩, 白礬(煆) 七錢半. 右爲末, 水浸蒸餠和丸梧子大, 朱砂三錢爲衣, 米飮下三十丸. 《局方》

Translation

Treats cold exuberant with a diarrhoea that will not stop, intestinal rumbling and abdominal pain, reversal cold of the hands and feet, and a faint weak pulse. Raw ground sulphur, 3 nyang; calcined alum, 7.5 don. Powder, make pills with water-soaked steamed cake the size of a paulownia seed, coat them with 3 don of cinnabar, and take thirty in rice water. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A mineral elixir for the same collapse the preceding formula treats with aconite, and the more dangerous of the two. Sulphur in quantity is a drastic warming agent in this tradition and a purgative in practice, which is the opposite of what an exhausted diarrhoea needs; the alum binds; and the cinnabar coating adds mercury to a patient already in circulatory failure.
