Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治熱ㆍ止嗽ㆍ消痰ㆍ定喘. 柴胡ㆍ人參各一兩半, 生黃芩ㆍ半夏ㆍ甘草各七錢半, 麥門冬三錢, 陳皮ㆍ五味子各二錢, 靑黛六錢. 右末, 水糊和丸梧子大, 白湯下三五十丸. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats heat, stops cough, disperses phlegm and settles panting. Bupleurum and ginseng, 1 nyang 5 don each; raw scutellaria, pinellia and licorice, 7 don 5 fun each; ophiopogon, 3 don; tangerine peel and schisandra, 2 don each; indigo, 6 don. Powder them, make pills the size of a paulownia seed with water paste, and give thirty to fifty down with plain hot water. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Sosiho-tang turned into a pill for long use, with ophiopogon and schisandra added for the lung and indigo for the heat. The indigo is the distinctive drug and the reason the name says 淸鎭, clear and settle: it is cold and heavy, and a heavy cold drug was thought to press down a fire that kept rising. **Contains pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state and must be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
