Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

止咳嗽ㆍ淸痰火ㆍ滋化源. 肺腎乃人身之化源也. 生地黃ㆍ熟地黃(並酒浸)ㆍ天門冬ㆍ麥門冬 各二兩, 黃栢(鹽酒炒) 一兩半, 白茯苓ㆍ山藥ㆍ枸杞子ㆍ白芍藥(酒炒)ㆍ知母(鹽酒炒)ㆍ玄參ㆍ薏苡仁(炒) 各一兩, 五味子 七錢, 甘草(生) 五錢. 右爲末, 蜜丸彈子大, 每一丸空心噙化嚥下. ○痰嗽甚, 加陳皮ㆍ貝母 各一兩. 《回春》

Translation

Stops cough, clears phlegm fire, and enriches the source of transformation — the lung and kidney being the source of transformation in the human body. Raw rehmannia and prepared rehmannia, both steeped in wine, asparagus root and ophiopogon, 2 nyang each; phellodendron fried with salt and wine, 1 nyang 5 don; white poria, Chinese yam, lycium fruit, white peony fried with wine, anemarrhena fried with salt and wine, scrophularia and dry-fried Job's tears, 1 nyang each; schisandra, 7 don; raw licorice, 5 don. Grind to a powder and make honey pills the size of a bullet; one pill at a time, held in the mouth on an empty stomach to dissolve and swallowed. ○ Where the phlegm cough is severe, add tangerine peel and fritillary, 1 nyang each. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A lozenge rather than a decoction, and that is the point of it: one bullet-sized honey pill held in the mouth and let dissolve, so that the moistening drugs pass slowly over the throat on their way down. For the dry night cough of 3.6's 夜嗽 the form matters as much as the content. The content is Yukmijihwang-won opened out — the two rehmannias with yam and poria — plus the two 門冬, phellodendron and anemarrhena for the fire, and schisandra to hold the lung. 滋化源, enriching the source of transformation, with the gloss naming lung and kidney, is the Hoechun's phrase for treating a cough at the kidney, which is the argument 3.14 makes at length. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
