Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治肺熱咳嗽咯血. 卽<a href='/formulas/hwangryeonagyo-won'>黃連阿膠元</a>也<span class='sochu'>方見大便</span>. 盖黃連ㆍ赤茯苓能抑心火, 肺得其淸則嗽自止. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats lung heat with cough and the coughing of blood. It is Coptis and Donkey-Hide Gelatin Pill<span class='sochu'>the formula is given in the Stool chapter</span>. Now coptis and red poria are able to restrain the heart fire, and when the lung gets their clearing the cough stops of itself. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Not a new formula but a new indication, and the reasoning for it is spelled out, which is unusual: the pill is a dysentery formula, and it is borrowed for cough because coptis and red poria take heat out of the heart, and the lung sits above the heart. 肺得其淸則嗽自止 — when the lung gets their clearing the cough stops of itself — is the whole argument. **Coughing of blood needs investigation. In 1613 it was mostly consumption; now it may be infection, bronchiectasis, pulmonary embolism or cancer, and none of them is treated this way.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
