Clinical commentary 臨床

The chapter's standard prescription for the fire cough of 3.6, and it is built in two halves: hogfennel, schizonepeta, mint and perilla leaf to release what is on the surface, and anemarrhena, fritillary, mulberry root bark and asparagus root to cool and moisten the lung underneath. Gelatin beads and smoked plum are there for the dryness the cooling would otherwise leave. A cough with scant sticky sputum, a red face and thirst — the 火嗽 picture the section gives — is what a modern clinician would see as a dry irritant or post-viral cough, and a moistening rather than an expectorant approach is reasonable for it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
