Clinical commentary 臨床

吐紅, the spitting of red, is blood in the sputum, and the formula is built around the two drugs the tradition uses for it: lily and ass-hide glue, with asparagus for the dryness. Around them sit the four gentlemen for the qi and a small warming tail — asarum, carthamus and cinnamon — which is unusual in a bleeding formula and tells you the patient being treated is cold and wasted rather than febrile. 勞嗽 with haemoptysis in a wasting patient is, in most cases, pulmonary tuberculosis. **Blood in the sputum requires investigation: chest imaging and sputum examination, and treatment of the cause.** Asarum contains aristolochic acid in some species and is restricted in several countries. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
