Translation

For a cough with the spitting of black blood, where a blow or a fall has injured the lung qi. Rhubarb, sappanwood, dried raw rehmannia, Chinese angelica and red peony, in equal parts. Grind to a powder and give 3 don each time stirred into warm wine. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A trauma formula rather than a cough formula: the indication is a cough bringing up dark blood after a blow to the chest, and the drugs are the standard blood-moving set — rhubarb and sappanwood to break the stasis, angelica and red peony to move and nourish. Dark rather than bright blood is the sign that it is old and pooled. **Blood in the sputum after a chest injury can mean a lung contusion, a haemothorax or a rib fracture with laceration, and needs imaging and assessment. Giving rhubarb in wine to such a patient is not a treatment.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
