Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治諸般久嗽. 貝母(薑製)ㆍ乾薑(生)ㆍ五味子ㆍ陳皮ㆍ半夏(製)ㆍ柴胡ㆍ桂心 各五錢, 黃芩ㆍ桑白皮 各二錢半, 木香ㆍ甘草 各一錢二分半. 右麄末, 每五錢, 入製杏仁七箇ㆍ生薑七片, 水煎服. ○一婦患積年嗽, 服此一貼卽愈, 神效. 《本事》

Translation

Treats long-standing coughs of every kind. Fritillary processed with ginger, raw dried ginger, schisandra, tangerine peel, processed pinellia, bupleurum and cinnamon heart, 5 don each; scutellaria and mulberry root bark, 2 don 5 fun each; costus and licorice, 1 don 2 fun 5 li each. Make a coarse powder; 5 don each time, with seven processed apricot kernels and seven slices of fresh ginger, decocted in water. ○ A woman who had suffered a cough for years was cured at once by a single packet of this — wonderfully effective. — Boje Bonsabang 本事 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A long formula with cold and warm drugs in balance: fritillary, scutellaria and mulberry root bark cooling the lung, dried ginger and cinnamon heart warming it, schisandra holding the qi in. That mixture is what a cough of years usually needs, since such patients are neither simply hot nor simply cold. The case note is the Bonsa's own and is worth taking as what it is — one patient, cured by one packet, recorded because it was remarkable. **Contains pinellia, toxic in the raw state and here processed; it must be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
