Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治久嗽, 乃收功後藥, 收歛之劑也. 鸎粟殼(蜜炒) 二錢, 人參ㆍ欵冬花ㆍ桑白皮ㆍ桔梗ㆍ阿膠珠ㆍ五味子各一錢, 貝母半錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三ㆍ梅一, 水煎服. 《綱目》

Translation

Treats long-standing cough; it is a medicine for after the work is done, a gathering and restraining preparation. Honey-fried poppy capsule, 2 don; ginseng, coltsfoot, mulberry root bark, platycodon, ass-hide glue in pearls and schisandra, 1 don each; fritillary, half a don. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and one smoked plum, and decoct in water. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

收功後藥 — a medicine for after the work is done — is the phrase that matters, and it is the chapter being careful: this is the formula for the end of a cough, once whatever caused it has been dealt with, and not for the beginning. Poppy capsule, schisandra and smoked plum are all astringents, and giving them while an infection is still producing sputum would hold it in. **Contains poppy capsule, the source of opium and a controlled substance.
