Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治痰嗽, 不問新久. 鸎粟殼(炒黃色) 四兩, 麻黃ㆍ甘草(炒) 各二兩. 右麄末, 每三錢, 烏梅一箇同煎服. 《綱目》

Translation

Treats phlegm cough, whether new or long-standing. Poppy capsule dry-fried to a yellow colour, 4 nyang; ephedra and dry-fried licorice, 2 nyang each. Make a coarse powder; 3 don each time, decocted with one smoked plum. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Poppy capsule at twice the weight of anything else, with ephedra beside it. The combination is an opium antitussive and a bronchodilator, which is a strikingly modern pair, and the formula's claim to work on any cough, new or old, follows from that: it suppresses the cough rather than treating its cause. 不問新久 — new or long-standing, no matter which — is exactly the warning sign for a symptomatic suppressant. **Contains poppy capsule, the source of opium and a controlled substance, and ephedra. This must not be prepared.
