Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

Translation

Treats the epidemic cough with abundant phlegm and alternating cold and heat. Ginseng, platycodon, schisandra, red poria and pinellia, 1 don 5 fun each; bitter orange peel and licorice, 7 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add five slices of ginger, and decoct in water. ○ At the turn of cold and hot weather, where a person of ample qi has wrapped himself too warmly and so becomes congested, and suddenly has abundant phlegm and a slight fever, this medicine suits best of all. If it is taken for a common cold and his sweat is forced, a grave illness must come of it. The merit of this formula lies in red poria's being able to lead heat out of the heart and bitter orange peel's being able to open a congested lung, and so it works easily. — Dangye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The note attached to the formula is better than the formula. It describes a particular patient — a robust person who has overdressed at a change of season and come out in phlegm and a low fever — and then says plainly what not to do: 若作感冒發其汗, 必成大病, treat it as a common cold and force the sweat and a grave illness will follow. That is a warning against the reflex treatment, and it is the kind of observation that only comes from having made the mistake. **Contains pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state and must be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
