治小兒頭瘡, 及多虱子瘙痒成瘡, 膿水不止. 細茶ㆍ水銀 各一錢(同硏細), 牙皂ㆍ川椒 各二錢. 右爲末, 油調擦上. 《回春》

Translation

Treats head sores in children, and sores made by scratching where lice are many, with pus and water that will not stop. Fine tea and quicksilver, 1 don of each (ground fine together); gleditsia tooth-pods and Sichuan pepper, 2 don of each. Powder the above, work it up with oil and rub it on. — Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The tea is a grinding medium. Rubbing metallic quicksilver with a dry leaf powder breaks the globules up into something that will take up oil — the same trituration trick that 松脂貼散 does with saliva, done here with tea instead. Gleditsia pods are saponin-bearing and would lather in the oil; Sichuan pepper is the acrid insecticide. The indication is louse infestation of a child's scalp scratched into weeping sores — 多虱子 is explicit — and the name promises to sweep it clean at one stroke. Gleditsia saponins and pepper would have had some real effect on the lice. **Contains quicksilver, rubbed into the broken scalp of a child. Mercury is absorbed through abraded skin and the scalp is well supplied with blood; children absorb more and tolerate far less. This must not be prepared.** Head lice are treated with a topical insecticide or wet combing, and the secondary impetigo with an antibiotic. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
