Worm-Killing Formula

Salchung-bang

한글 살충방  ·  Pinyin Sha Chong Fang

殺蟲方

The transcription writes 虫 for 蟲 in all three clauses of the body while the section head prints 蟲; 蟲 is printed here, the corpus carrying it 99 times against five of 虫 and the chapter's own registered text using it 21 times against two. The first clause names both 土蜂房 at 2 don and 露蜂房 at 2 don 5 fun as separate drugs; only 露蜂房 has an id of its own, and since folding 土蜂房 into it would double the row, the ground wasp's nest is left out of the ingredient list and named here. 䃃砂 is printed as the transcription has it and entered under 硇砂; 片腦 and 龍腦 are the same drug in this corpus. The ingredient list carries the first clause only, the named prescription; the Deukhyo's four-drug powder and the Immun's bare instruction are given in the source text and translation. 藥水 is the 洗藥方 of this same section.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three clauses, each less a prescription than a list of what kills. The Haejang's powder is twelve drugs, and the working ones are the poisons: copper sulfate, calomel, realgar, alum, sal ammoniac. Frankincense, dragon bone, tiger bone, musk and borneol are the aromatic and astringent padding. The Deukhyo's shorter powder leans on areca, the tradition's chief anthelmintic, with coptis and burnt pangolin scale. The Immun does not bother with a formula and simply says 須用斑猫ㆍ藜蘆 — you must use blister beetle and veratrum. 惡瘡有蟲 is not a figure of speech. A neglected ulcer in a warm climate gets flyblown, and maggots in a wound are visible, which is why this is the one place the chapter is certain its 蟲 is really there. Copper sulfate and arsenic sulfide would in fact kill larvae, and so would cantharidin. **This is the most dangerous formula in the section. It contains realgar (arsenic sulfide), calomel (a mercury salt), copper sulfate and, in the third clause, blister beetle — cantharidin, a blistering agent and renal toxin — and veratrum, which is emetic and cardiotoxic. All of it is applied to an open, broken wound, where arsenic, mercury and cantharidin are absorbed freely. It also uses tiger bone, pangolin scale and musk, all taken from protected species. This must not be prepared.** Wound myiasis is treated by irrigation, mechanical removal of the larvae and debridement, and the wound then needs its underlying cause found. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
