Translation

Treats malign sores whose pus does not come away freely, and the fistulous sore of many years' standing. Sparrow droppings, verdigris, sal ammoniac, mercury sublimate and calomel, 5 fun of each; musk and borneol, 1 ja of each. Powder the above, bind it with wheat paste and roll it into a stick, and push the stick into the mouth of the sore; or it may simply be dusted on. — Jeongui 精義 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A wick, not a plaster. Five mineral powders with musk and borneol are bound with wheat paste and rolled into a thin stick that is pushed into the opening of a sore — the 錠子 form this chapter and the 癰疽門 use repeatedly. The stick dissolves inside the track and keeps it open, which is the whole point: 膿出不快, pus that will not come away, and 疳瘻, a fistula of years' standing, are both problems of a cavity that has closed over while still infected. The surgical reasoning is exactly right and is still the reasoning behind a wick or a seton. A sinus will not heal while it is undrained, and something has to hold the track open from the inside. **Contains mercury sublimate and calomel, both mercury salts, and verdigris, a copper salt, placed inside an open wound track where absorption is at its greatest. Musk is taken from a protected species. This must not be prepared.** A chronic sinus or fistula needs imaging to find its track and its source, surgical drainage, and treatment of what is feeding it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
