Engender the Flesh Powder

Saenggi-san

한글 생기산  ·  Pinyin Sheng Ji San

生肌散

The Bogam carries three formulas called 生肌散, and this leaf gives a composition of its own rather than a cross-reference, so it is registered with the chapter tail. The 癰疽門 formula from the Jeongui — four drugs at a nyang and four at 5 don, with the dog-skull substitution for dragon bone and a 一方 appended from the Jikji — is registered as saenggi-san-ongjeo; the Dansim's four-drug powder of dragon bone, glauberite, calomel and dried rouge is saenggi-san. This one shares all eight drug names with saenggi-san-ongjeo but at different weights and in different pairs, calcines the glauberite, writes 烏賊骨 for 烏賊魚骨 and 枯白礬 for 白礬灰, and carries no 一方; it is a variant of the same recipe rather than the same text, and the chapter prints it as a formula in its own right. The transcription writes 歛, normalized to 斂 among the standard 俗字 corrections and in line with the chapter's own usage. 乾臙脂 is printed with 臙 as the transcription and the herb list both have it. 煆 is left unnormalized.

Translation

Treats every sore, closing its mouth, with great effect. Glauberite (calcined) and talc, 1 nyang of each; cuttlefish bone and dragon bone, 5 don of each; litharge, dry-calcined alum, dried rouge and white lead, 2 don 5 fun of each. Powder the above and dust it dry into the sore; excellent. — Jeongui 精義 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A dusting powder of eight drugs, all of them mineral or shell, and every one of them chosen to dry. Calcined glauberite and talc are the bulk and the absorbent base; cuttlefish bone and dragon bone are calcium carbonate and phosphate, bland and desiccant; dry-calcined alum is the astringent; litharge, white lead and dried rouge are the colouring and drying metals. There is no fat, no wax and no water — 乾糝, dusted on dry. 斂口, drawing the mouth of the sore closed, is the last stage of the chapter's wound sequence, and the 生肌方 leaf at the end of the section gives the rule that governs it: this powder is not to go on until the dead tissue in the sore is gone. **Contains litharge (lead monoxide) and white lead (lead carbonate), dusted into an open wound. Lead is absorbed through a granulating surface and accumulates in bone; there is no safe dose of it on a wound.** The bland absorbents — talc, cuttlefish bone, calcined alum — are the part of this powder with a real action, and a clean granulating wound closes best under a simple non-adherent dressing. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
