Pine Resin Plaster Powder

Songjicheop-san

한글 송지첩산  ·  Pinyin Song Zhi Tie San

松脂貼散

The transcription sets 明者 and 以泥做者 in ≪≫, but both are substance glosses rather than cross-references and are printed in parentheses, as the corpus does for 無則狗頭骨代之 at saenggi-san-ongjeo. 膩粉 is entered under 輕粉, calomel: the 湯液篇 entry for 輕粉 gives its alternative names as 一名汞粉, 一名水銀粉, 亦名膩粉, 或曰峭粉. 飛煉水銀而成, while 胡粉 is 一名定粉, 一名光粉, 一名瓦粉 and does not take it. The corpus formerly read the name as 胡粉, white lead, here and at myohyang-hwan and four other leaves; that reading is withdrawn. 土蜂窠 has no entry of its own in the herb list and is entered under 露蜂房, following jeongjeo-ilbang, which does the same for 土蜂房. The porcelain vessel is apparatus and is kept in the source text only. 黃栢 is left as the transcription prints it. 藥水, the medicated wash, is the 洗藥方 of this same section.

Translation

Treats every malign sore and the nameless sore. Phellodendron, coptis, pine resin (the clear kind), calomel, a ground wasp's nest (the kind built of mud) and liquorice, 1 don of each. Powder the above; separately take 1 don of quicksilver, put it in the hollow of the palm and rub it with saliva until it is a paste, put it into a porcelain vessel, mix it with the drug powder and clear oil until it is like thin syrup. First wash the sore with the medicated wash, wipe it dry and paint this on, and it is cured. It is especially good for scabies. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A mercury ointment with a resin body, and with 膩粉 resolved as calomel it is mercurial twice over — the free metal and the chloride. The mixing instruction is the interesting part: a don of quicksilver is rubbed in the palm with saliva until the metal breaks up into a grey paste, and only then is it worked into the powder and the oil. That is real technique — liquid mercury will not disperse into a fat base until it has been triturated, and saliva's mucin is a crude but effective dispersing agent. The resin and the oil give the plaster its hold, the coptis and phellodendron cool, the mud-wasp nest is the chapter's standing sore drug. 治疥尤妙 is the honest indication. Mercury ointments were a genuine scabicide and remained in use into the nineteenth century, so the claim is not empty. **Contains quicksilver and calomel — 膩粉, mercurous chloride — so two mercury compounds, one of them the free metal rubbed bare-handed in the palm, spread together over broken skin. Mercury is absorbed through skin, and through abraded skin far faster. Rubbing metallic mercury in the bare palm exposes the preparer as much as the patient, and this chapter records mercury poisoning as a complication of its own treatments. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
