Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治氣痛. 啞芙蓉<span class='sochu'>卽鴉片</span> 二錢半, 阿魏一錢, 木香ㆍ沈香各五分, 牛黃二分半. 右將沈香ㆍ木香ㆍ牛黃爲末, 以鴉片, 阿魏放椀內, 滴水熔化, 和蜜爲丸菉豆大, 金箔爲衣, 每一粒, 熱氣痛, 涼水下, 冷氣痛, 滾水下, 神效. 《回春》

Translation

Treats qi pain. Mute hibiscus <span class='sochu'>that is, opium</span> 2 don 5 pun; asafoetida 1 don; costus and aloeswood 5 pun each; bezoar 2 pun 5 ri. Powder the aloeswood, costus and bezoar; put the opium and asafoetida in a bowl, drip water in and melt them, mix with honey and make pills the size of a mung bean, coated with gold leaf. Take one grain — for hot qi pain with cool water, for cold qi pain with boiling water — with spirit-like effect. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Gi)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Opium, named plainly — 卽鴉片, that is opium — at two and a half don in a batch, and the pill is the size of a mung bean, one at a time. 一粒, one grain, is the dose, and the Hoechun's 神效 is what a grain of opium does to pain. The Women chapter's Daeryeong-san used poppy husk; this is the first formula in the Bogam to name the drug itself. The instruction to take it with cold or hot water by the kind of pain is the only diagnostic element. **Opium is a controlled substance.
