Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治諸氣注痛. 又治心膈痛, 腹脇痛, 腎氣痛. 全蝎全者七箇, 巴豆十箇(去皮爲霜), 木香ㆍ胡椒各二錢半, 朱砂一錢半內入, 半爲衣. 右爲末, 蒸餠和丸麻子大, 朱砂爲衣, 每五七丸, 薑湯, 溫酒任下. 《局方》

Translation

Treats fixed pain from any qi. Also treats pain of the heart and diaphragm, of the abdomen and ribside, and kidney qi pain. Whole scorpions seven; croton ten, skin removed and made into frost; costus and black pepper 2 don 5 pun each; cinnabar 1 don 5 pun, half put inside and half for the coating. Powder them, bind with steamed cake into pills the size of a hemp seed, coat with cinnabar, and take five to seven at a time with ginger decoction or warm wine as preferred. — Hwaje Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Gi)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The most violent formula in the chapter — scorpion, croton, cinnabar — in pills the size of a hemp seed, five to seven at a dose. The scorpion is for spasm and the croton for what the spasm has locked in, and the reasoning is that pain this severe must be broken open. **Contains croton, a violent purgative; scorpion, which is toxic; and cinnabar, which is mercury sulfide.
