Two Aromatics Powder

Ihyang-san

한글 이향산  ·  Pinyin Er Xiang San

二香散

The Donguibogam has two formulas named 二香散 — this is the one in the abscesses chapter, and the other, from the summerheat chapter, is registered as ihyang-san (香附子ㆍ香薷). The transcription writes 癕 for 癰 and 為 for 爲; the standard forms are printed, and 白豆蔲 and 麄末 are printed as the transcription and the corpus both have them. Two collation notes, on 防/方 and on a lacuna filled by 氣門 in the first edition (初刊本), fall inside the page break in the middle of this leaf but annotate the 癰疽五發證 passage that precedes it, not this formula.

Make the above into a coarse powder. For each dose take 3 don with five slices of ginger and two jujubes, and decoct together in water and take. — Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Not a sores formula at all by composition: this is the 香砂 and 不換金正氣散 territory — alpinia and cardamom kernel at the head, with costus root, Korean mint, round cardamom, clove, fermented pinellia, magnolia bark, tangerine peel and atractylodes lancea behind them. The chapter puts it here because of a specific aetiological scheme set out just above this leaf: the 五發 have five causes — wind, Qi, food, drug toxin and taxation — and of those the first three are called easy to treat and this formula is given for all three. Drug toxin and taxation are called hard to treat and get 國老膏, 槐花酒 and the kidney formulas instead. 調暢胃氣, regulating and freeing the Stomach Qi, is the whole claim. It is the chapter looking after the digestion of someone who is ill with a deep infection and eating badly, which is a real and still-relevant concern even though nothing in the formula touches the infection itself. The two aromatics the name counts are not stated in the leaf; three of the drugs are 香 — costus root, Korean mint and clove — and the two heaviest drugs in the formula are neither of them. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
