Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治寒濕相合, 肢體皆痛, 行步無力. 蒼朮四兩, 羌活一錢, 柴胡ㆍ藁本ㆍ白朮ㆍ澤瀉ㆍ升麻各五分, 黃柏三分, 紅花一分. 右剉, 先以水三盞, 煎蒼朮至二盞, 入諸藥, 復煎至一盞, 去滓, 空心熱服. 《東垣》一名蒼朮復煎湯. 《東垣》

Translation

Treats cold and damp joined together, with pain of the limbs and body and no strength in walking. Atractylodes lancea 4 nyang; notopterygium 1 don; bupleurum, ligusticum, white atractylodes, alisma and cimicifuga 5 pun each; phellodendron 3 pun; safflower 1 pun. Cut up; first decoct the atractylodes lancea in 3 jan of water down to 2, then put in the other medicinals and decoct again down to 1, strain off the dregs and take hot on an empty stomach. Also called Changchul Bokjeon-tang. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Seup)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four nyang of atractylodes lancea against a pun of safflower — a four-hundred-to-one spread, the widest in these chapters. The name records the method: the chief is decocted alone first and the rest added to that liquor, so what the other medicinals are carried in is already saturated with the one that matters. Safflower at a single pun and phellodendron at three are homeopathic by any measure, and Dongwon uses them as directional markers rather than as active quantities — safflower to reach the blood, phellodendron to reach below. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
