Two Horns Drink

Igak-eum

한글 이각음  ·  Pinyin Er Jiao Yin

二角飮

The two horns of the name are 犀角 and 羚羊角, confirmed from the leaf itself. Neither is decocted: 濃磨 means rubbed down thick against a grinding stone with water, which is how both horns are prepared throughout this corpus, so the preparation gives no weight and the equal-parts instruction carries all of it. 井水, plain well water, has no entry in the herb dictionary — the dictionary's headword is 井華水, well-flower water, which is a different and narrower thing — so it is left in the source text only and not substituted. The transcription writes 黑鲩 and 𠍠; 陷 and 熱 are printed above.

Translation

Treats pox scorched and dry and sunk black, with the body hot as fire. Rhinoceros horn and antelope horn, equal parts of each; rub them thick on a stone with well water, take the juice and give it. It has the power of bringing back life. — Jonghaeng 種杏 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two horns and nothing else, rubbed down in well water until the water is thick with them, for a child whose eruption has dried black and who is burning. In this tradition both horns are the coldest things in the cabinet and both are reached for at the top of a fever, rhinoceros horn for heat that has entered the blood and antelope horn for heat that has reached the liver and brought on convulsions. Giving them together, in equal parts, with no third drug and no decoction, is the gesture of a physician at the end of what he has. The leaf's claim — 有回生之功, it has the power of bringing back life — is not supported. Both horns are keratin, the same protein as hair and fingernail, and the controlled work that has been done on rhinoceros horn finds no antipyretic or other effect beyond that of the protein. There was nothing here to cool a child with haemorrhagic smallpox. **Rhinoceros horn is CITES Appendix I and all international commercial trade in it is banned; the demand recorded in leaves like this one is why every rhinoceros species is now at risk and why two subspecies are already gone. Saiga antelope horn is also CITES-listed, and the saiga population collapsed by roughly ninety-five per cent within a decade in the 1990s, driven largely by the horn trade. Both drugs are pharmacologically inert keratin, so the trade that is emptying these species buys nothing at all. This must not be prepared.** Where this corpus prescribes either horn the honest reading is the same every time, and it is given here once rather than repeated. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
