Four Dungs Powder

Sabun-san

한글 사분산  ·  Pinyin Si Fen San

四糞散

The leaf carries three alternative names, 無價散, 捷效化毒散 and 萬金散, from two further sources. All three were romanised and checked against the database: muga-san, cheophyohwadok-san and mangeum-san are all unoccupied, and no formula of any of those three names is already registered under another id, so no alias collision arises and no second entry is stood up. The ○一方 clause is not a separate formula but the substitute to use when the four dungs cannot be got in time, and it is treated inside this entry. 貓糞 and 獒糞 have no entries in the herb dictionary and are left out of the ingredient list; the dung of the boy is entered under 人屎 and that of the pig under 猪糞, and nothing is substituted for the other two. The transcription writes 黑鲩, 陰 and ꇩ(雄) and 為; 陷, 陰, 雄 and 爲 are printed above, following the corpus. 煆 is kept as the transcription gives it, that being the corpus form.

Translation

Treats the pox that turns back and sinks black, in extremity. A boy, a black cat, a black dog and a black pig, one of each, all of them taken uncastrated and male; first, on the Double Ninth, set each in a clean room, let them eat nothing mixed, and collect their dung; shade-dry it, and when the eighth day of the twelfth month comes, before the sun is up, calcine it with its nature preserved and grind it to a fine powder. One don at a dose, stirred into honey water. — Immun 入門 ○Another method: where there is haste and this drug cannot be had, simply take the dung of a healthy child, burn it to ash, and give it stirred into honey water. — Jeongjeon 正傳 ○Also called Priceless Powder, and also Quick-Acting Toxin-Transforming Powder. — Dansim 丹心 ○Also called Ten-Thousand-Gold Powder. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The dung of four male animals, one of them a boy, each kept alone in a clean room on the ninth day of the ninth month and fed nothing mixed, the droppings shade-dried through the autumn and then calcined before sunrise on the eighth of the twelfth month, ground, and given a don at a time in honey water to a child whose pox has gone black. The calendar is the point of the preparation as much as the material: two festival dates, the Double Ninth and the eighth of the twelfth month, with the burning done in the dark before the sun comes up. Its three alternative names — priceless, quick-acting toxin-transforming, ten-thousand-gold — say what was being claimed for it, and the claim is in proportion to the despair. Black sinking is haemorrhagic smallpox, and nothing in this section changed its outcome. The underlying reasoning is stated a few leaves earlier, where the chapter says the black sign belongs to the kidney and that four teeth, being kidney substance, can therefore draw out the kidney toxin. The same correspondence runs here: blackness is drawn out by what is black and by what the body has already expelled. It is a consistent system and it is not an observation. **This is faecal material given by mouth to a child whose skin is broken open across the whole body. Animal and human faeces carry Clostridium tetani spores, and tetanus is the specific danger when faecal matter meets a wound; the pocks of smallpox are wounds. 火煆存性, calcining so as to preserve the nature, is a deliberately low burn and is not sterilisation — bacterial spores survive heat that ordinary cells do not. Enteric bacteria are the rest of the risk, in a child who cannot afford another infection. The substitute given in the ○一方 clause, a healthy child’s dung burnt to ash, carries exactly the same hazards. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
