Borneol Paste Pills

Yongnoe-goja

한글 용뇌고자  ·  Pinyin Long Nao Gao Zi

龍腦膏子

The transcription writes 黑鲩 and 為; 陷 and 爲 are printed above, following the corpus, which gives 陷 against 鲩 and 爲 throughout. The leaf's own drug is written 梅花腦子, the plum-blossom grade of borneol; the herb dictionary holds the headword 龍腦 with 小腦 and 片腦 as grade-name variants but not this one, and the ingredient is entered under 龍腦 because the leaf's own head name and its 一名 both read 龍腦. The alternative name 猪心龍腦膏 romanises onto jeosim-yongnoe-go, which is unoccupied; no second entry is stood up for it. The borneol is weighed and the pig heart blood is not; the three vehicles are alternatives, not a sequence.

Translation

Treats pox that has not come through, with vexation of the heart, frantic agitation, panting and raving, sometimes with the seeing of ghosts and spirits, or pox already erupted that turns back and sinks black; if it is not treated quickly the toxin enters the viscera and the child must die. Plum-blossom borneol, 1 don, ground fine; drip in pig heart blood and bind into pills the size of a bean. One pill to a dose, dissolved and sent down in well-flower water. For vexation of the heart and frantic agitation, dissolve it in gromwell decoction. For black sinking, dissolve it in warm weak wine. A little while after the dose is finished the heart and spirit settle, sleep comes, and the sores come through and quicken again. ○Also called Pig-Heart Borneol Paste. — Hwalin 活人 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One aromatic and one raw animal fluid: a don of the best grade of borneol ground fine, bound with blood dripped from a pig's heart into pills the size of a bean. The indication is the child who is delirious — vexed, frantic, panting, talking nonsense, seeing things that are not there — while the eruption either has not come out or has come out and gone back in and darkened. That is a real and recognisable picture. In severe smallpox the delirium belongs to the toxaemia, and an eruption that flattens and darkens after appearing is the haemorrhagic turn, which killed very nearly everyone it took. The leaf says as much in its own words: if this is not treated at once the toxin enters the viscera and the child dies. The reasoning behind the drug is the aromatic one. Borneol is cold, piercing and intensely volatile, and this tradition used such substances to open a clouded spirit; the pig's heart blood is a correspondence, heart to heart, and the alternative name says so outright. What the leaf actually reports as the effect — the spirit settles, the child sleeps — is what a strongly aromatic terpene given to an exhausted, agitated child might well look like, and it is not the same thing as the eruption coming back out. **Borneol is a bicyclic terpene closely related to camphor, and camphor-family terpenes are a well-documented cause of seizures in children, who absorb them readily and clear them slowly. One don is about 4 grams, given whole to an infant or small child in one pill, and no dose by weight is anywhere in this leaf. This must not be prepared.** The pig heart blood is used raw and uncooked and would carry whatever the animal carried; given by mouth to a child already critically ill, it is a route of infection and nothing else. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
