Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治頭風. 荊芥穗ㆍ石膏(煆) 等分爲末, 每二錢, 以薑葱煎水調下. 名荊芥散. 《綱目》

Translation

Treats head wind. Schizonepeta spikes and calcined gypsum in equal parts, powdered; take 2 don a dose, stirred down in a decoction of ginger and scallion. It is called Hyeonggae-san. — Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Du)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs pulling in opposite directions and a vehicle that decides which way the formula goes: schizonepeta scatters outward, calcined gypsum cools downward, and the ginger-and-scallion decoction sends the pair to the surface. 頭風 is the chapter's name for a headache that recurs with exposure to wind and cold, and the formula is aimed at the version of it that runs hot. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
