Schizonepeta and Siler Overcome Toxin Powder (Epidemic chapter)

Hyeongbangpaedok-san

한글 형방패독산  ·  Pinyin Jing Fang Bai Du San

荊防敗毒散

This is the only leaf in the transcription that prints the composition of 荊防敗毒散 in full. The Cold Damage chapter gives the name only as a variant at the foot of the Insampaedok-san leaf (加荊芥穗 · 防風 等分), and the twelve drugs here agree with that definition, ginseng included. The entry registered as hyeongbangpaedok-san carries the modern Korean clinical composition, which omits the ginseng, so the two are kept apart.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Insampaedok-san with schizonepeta and saposhnikovia added, which is precisely how the Cold Damage chapter defines the name — and here it is printed out in full: twelve drugs, eleven at a don and licorice at five fun. The two added drugs are the lightest and most surface-directed of the wind medicinals, and they shift a formula built for aching limbs towards the head and the skin. That shift is why the indication reaches the big-head epidemic, in which the head and face swell. Whether the chapter means mumps, a spreading facial cellulitis or an erysipelas cannot be settled from the text, and the formula was given for all of them. A hot, swollen, spreading face is not something to treat at home. Still in daily use in Korea, where it is the standard opening prescription for acute eruptive skin complaints — though the clinical version generally drops the ginseng that the Bogam keeps. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
