治瘟疫及發斑. 羌活ㆍ獨活ㆍ前胡ㆍ柴胡ㆍ川芎ㆍ枳殼ㆍ桔梗ㆍ赤茯苓ㆍ人參ㆍ防風ㆍ荊芥ㆍ蒼朮ㆍ白朮ㆍ赤芍藥ㆍ當歸ㆍ生地黃 各六分, 薄荷ㆍ甘草 各三分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑 三, 棗 二, 水煎服. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats epidemic disease and the breaking out of macules. Notopterygium, pubescent angelica, peucedanum, bupleurum, chuanxiong, bitter orange, platycodon, red poria, ginseng, saposhnikovia, schizonepeta, atractylodes lancea, white atractylodes, red peony, Korean angelica and raw rehmannia, 6 fun each; mint and licorice, 3 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes, and decoct in water. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · On)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Insampaedok-san with six drugs added and every weight cut to six fun — schizonepeta and saposhnikovia for the surface, the two atractylodes for damp, and red peony, Korean angelica and raw rehmannia for the blood. The last three are what the addition is really for: the indication is the breaking out of macules, and in this tradition a rash is heat that has reached the blood. Eighteen drugs at six fun and three fun is a thin formula by weight, and that thinness is characteristic of the Jeongjeon — broad cover at a low dose, given early, before it is clear whether the illness will stay at the surface or erupt. A febrile illness with a spreading petechial or maculopapular rash is a presentation that needs assessment rather than a decoction; meningococcal disease and the severe exanthems both begin that way.
