Fragrance and Bitter Orange Husk Pill
Hyanggak-hwan
한글 향각환 · Pinyin Xiang Ke Wan
Pill formula, bulk amounts: the aged granary rice (1 doe) is dry-fried to yellow together with 20 croton seeds, and the croton is then discarded — only its fire-force remains in the rice; all are powdered and bound with a vinegar paste into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; 70–80 pills with plain boiled water. Note on modern practice: croton (巴豆) is a regulated toxic medicinal; here it never enters the pill itself, serving only to medicate the rice in frying — the classical technique of borrowing an intensity without swallowing its source.
