Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治遠近一切目疾, 內外瞖膜ㆍ攀睛努肉ㆍ爛弦風眼, 及年老虛弱, 目昏多眵, 迎風冷淚, 視物昏花, 久成內障. 此藥最能降火升水, 可宜久服, 夜能讀細字. 天門冬ㆍ麥門冬ㆍ生乾地黃ㆍ熟地黃 各三兩, 知母 酒炒 二兩, 人參ㆍ地骨皮ㆍ肉蓯蓉 酒浸ㆍ牛膝ㆍ杜衝 酒炒ㆍ石斛ㆍ杏仁 各一兩半, 當歸 酒洗ㆍ白茯苓ㆍ山藥 蒸ㆍ菟絲子 酒製ㆍ黃栢 酒炒ㆍ枳殼ㆍ甘菊 酒洗ㆍ靑箱子ㆍ草決明ㆍ白蒺藜ㆍ羚羊角屑 各一兩, 防風ㆍ犀角 各八錢, 川芎ㆍ五味子ㆍ黃連ㆍ甘草(灸) 各七錢. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 空心鹽湯下百丸. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats every eye disease new or old — inner and outer screens, flesh creeping over the eye, rotten-rim wind, and the dim eye of the old and weak with much discharge, cold tearing in wind, and dim flowering vision long since become an internal obstruction. This medicine is best able to bring down fire and raise water and may well be taken long, so that at night one can read fine print. Asparagus, ophiopogon, dried raw rehmannia and prepared rehmannia 3 nyang each; anemarrhena wine-fried 2 nyang; ginseng, lycium root bark, cistanche (wine-steeped), achyranthes, eucommia (wine-fried), dendrobium and apricot kernel 1 nyang 5 don each; Korean angelica (wine-washed), poria, dioscorea (steamed), cuscuta (wine-processed), phellodendron (wine-fried), bitter orange, chrysanthemum (wine-washed), celosia seed, cassia seed, tribulus and antelope horn shavings 1 nyang each; saposhnikovia and rhinoceros horn 8 don each; chuanxiong, schisandra, coptis and roasted licorice 7 don each. Powder them, make honey pills the size of parasol-tree seeds, and take a hundred on an empty stomach with salt decoction. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Twenty-nine medicinals and the largest formula in the chapter — the Uigam's attempt at one prescription for the whole subject. The structure is still legible under the bulk: four moistening drugs at three nyang to raise the water, phellodendron and anemarrhena to bring the fire down, and the chapter's entire surface pharmacy at a nyang each on top of them. **Antelope horn and rhinoceros horn come from CITES-listed species and cannot lawfully be traded; goat horn and water buffalo horn are used in their place.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
