Translation

Treats every eye disease — inner and outer screens veiling the pupil, wind eye and rotten rims, and in the old and weak much sticky discharge, cold tearing in wind and dim flowering vision. Asparagus wine-steeped and pounded to a paste, ophiopogon, dried raw rehmannia (wine-steeped) and prepared rehmannia 3 nyang each; ginseng, poria, dioscorea and lycium fruit 1 nyang 5 don each; achyranthes (wine-washed), dendrobium (wine-washed), cassia seed (lightly stir-fried), apricot kernel, chrysanthemum, cuscuta (wine-processed) and bitter orange 1 nyang each; antelope horn shavings, rhinoceros horn shavings, saposhnikovia and celosia seed 8 don each; schisandra, licorice, coptis, tribulus and chuanxiong 7 don each. Powder them, make honey pills the size of parasol-tree seeds, and take fifty to seventy on an empty stomach with salt decoction. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The Jeongjeon's version of the formula above, with the phellodendron and anemarrhena left out and lycium fruit and dioscorea put in — a gentler build for the same indication. Set side by side, the two show the difference between a school that drains fire and one that secures the root, which is what the name says it does. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
