Coptis in Pig's Stomach Pill for Rigid Center

Hwangryeonjeodu-hwan

한글 황련저두환(강중)  ·  Pinyin Huang Lian Zhu Du Wan

黃連猪肚丸

Pill formula, bulk amounts: the powder is sealed into one boar's stomach, steamed soft in a steamer, pounded to a pulp, and rolled into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; 70–90 pills with thin rice water. A little refined honey may be added. Same name, different formula (同名異方): distinct from the Uihak Jeongjeon Hwangryeonjeodu-hwan of the center-wasting section — that one pairs coptis with anemarrhena and gualou root; this Deukhyo version pairs it with roasted wheat and hostwood poria, and follows Seokjajeni-tang in sequence.

Translation

Treats the same as above; taken directly after the preceding medicine. One boar's stomach; coptis and dry-fried wheat, 5 nyang each; trichosanthes root and hostwood poria, 4 nyang each; ophiopogon 2 nyang. Powder the above, pack into the pig's stomach and seal the opening, set in a steamer and steam until soft, pound to a pulp, and form into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds. Take 70–90 pills with thin rice water; a little refined honey may be added. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Sogal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The same vessel, a different cargo — where the Jeongjeon version cools the stomach that eats too much, this one steadies the heart that will not stand down, wheat and hostwood poria smuggled in beside the coptis for the spirit's sake. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
