Translation

Treats a dysentery of pus and blood with fever and abdominal pain and a surging rapid pulse. Scutellaria and white peony, 2 don each; licorice, 1 don. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water. If the abdominal pain is severe, add 3 fun of cassia heartwood. Also called Hwanggeum-tang. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The Shanghanlun's Scutellaria Decoction, here under its fuller name, and the parent of every dysentery formula in this section — Jakyak-tang and the rest are built on these three drugs. Scutellaria for the heat, peony for the cramping pain, licorice to harmonize; and a little cassia heartwood when the pain is severe, which is the formula's one concession to the fact that a cold prescription can make a spasm worse. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
