Translation

Treats a dysentery of pus and blood with inner urgency and dragging-down behind. Tangkuei, 2.5 don; rhubarb, scutellaria and white peony, 1 don each; coptis, costus root and areca, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Jakyak-tang's drugs rearranged with tangkuei at the head, so the formula leans on moving the blood rather than clearing the heat. The chapter's standing explanation of tenesmus is that the qi is stagnant behind and the blood is stuck, so costus root and areca move the one and tangkuei the other while rhubarb clears what is lodged. Of the three formulas for this symptom — this, Jakyak-tang and Doche-tang — it is the gentlest on the heat and the strongest on the blood. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
