Quicken the Blood and Dispel Wind Powder

Hwalhyeolgupung-san

한글 활혈구풍산  ·  Pinyin Huo Xue Qu Feng San

活血驅風散

The transcription writes the sophora ingredient as 槐潤, which is not a drug name; 槐實 is read from the sense and from the Bogam's usage elsewhere. The printed edition needs checking here.

Translation

Treats kidney-visceral wind with damp itching below the scrotum and sores and lichen breaking out on the legs. Tribulus (stir-fried), Korean angelica, chuanxiong, angelica dahurica, asarum, peach kernel, pinellia, sophora pod, white peony, flying-squirrel droppings and raw licorice 6 pun each; atractylodes lancea, eucommia, cinnamon bark, coix, gastrodia, tangerine peel, areca, magnolia bark and bitter orange 3 pun each. Cut up as one packet, add 5 slices of ginger and 2 jujubes, decoct in water, stir in a little powdered frankincense, and take on an empty stomach. The frankincense assists the heart qi, so that heart and kidney communicate with each other. — Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · Jeoneum)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The lead formula for kidney-visceral wind, and the only one of the group taken internally in quantity. Twenty medicinals in very small weights, with the Samul-tang blood medicinals carried through wind drugs — the Jikji holds that the scrotal damp and the leg sores are one disorder reaching the skin through the blood, so the blood is moved rather than the damp drained. The note on frankincense is the author's own and explains why a resin for pain sits in a formula for itch. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
