Clinical commentary 臨床

華盖, the flowery canopy, is the lung — the canopy spread over the other viscera — and the name says what the formula is addressed to. Ephedra at double weight leads, with the whole of the rest of the formula aimed downward: perilla seed, mulberry root bark and apricot kernel for the qi that is rising, tangerine peel and poria for the phlegm and the water behind it. 鼻塞聲重 — a stopped nose and a heavy voice — is the pair of signs this chapter uses for cold in the lung rather than heat, and the three formulas that carry it (this, Samyo-tang and Insamyunpye-tang) are all ephedra formulas. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
