Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治寒壅相交, 肺氣不利, 咳嗽痰盛. 麻黃ㆍ貝母ㆍ阿膠珠各二錢, 杏仁ㆍ甘草(灸) 各一錢, 知母ㆍ桑白皮ㆍ半夏ㆍ款冬花各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑三片, 水煎服. 《得效》

Translation

Treats cough with abundant phlegm, where cold and congestion cross each other and the lung qi is inhibited. Ephedra, fritillaria and ass-hide glue beads, 2 don each; apricot kernel and honey-roasted licorice, 1 don each; anemarrhena, mulberry root bark, pinellia and tussilago, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, and decoct in water. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The first formula the chapter offers for a wind cough, and its name is misleading: tussilago, which the formula is named after, is one of the four smallest items in it, while the working weight sits in ephedra, fritillaria and ass-hide glue. 寒壅相交 — cold and congestion crossing each other — is the indication, and the three lead drugs answer it one each: ephedra opens the surface the cold has closed, fritillaria loosens the phlegm, and ass-hide glue moistens what the coughing has dried. The small drugs below them cool and settle. It is a well-balanced prescription for an acute productive cough and the balance is visible in the weights. **Contains pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state and must be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
