Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治肺經寒熱不調, 涎嗽不已. 桑白皮ㆍ紫蘇葉ㆍ杏仁ㆍ麻黃各一錢半, 款冬花ㆍ紫菀茸ㆍ五味子ㆍ甘草各一錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎去滓, 入黃蠟皂角子大, 再煎熔化服之. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats the lung channel out of balance between cold and heat, with a drooling cough that will not stop. Mulberry root bark, perilla leaf, apricot kernel and ephedra, 1 don 5 fun each; tussilago, aster shoots, schisandra and licorice, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water and strain off the dregs; put in a piece of beeswax the size of a soapberry seed, decoct again until it melts, and take it. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Eight drugs, hence the name, and the ninth thing in it is the one to notice: a lump of beeswax melted into the strained decoction. An oily film carried down over an inflamed throat is a demulcent, and the chapter is using beeswax where a modern pharmacy would use a syrup or a glycerine base. The same device appears nowhere else in the chapter. 寒熱不調 — cold and heat out of balance — is why the formula holds warm and cool drugs together: ephedra and perilla leaf on one side, mulberry root bark and aster on the other, with schisandra restraining the whole. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
