Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治肺胃虛寒, 久嗽不已. 款冬花ㆍ人參ㆍ五味子ㆍ桑白皮ㆍ紫菀各一兩. 右爲末, 蜜丸芡實大, 每一丸, 以淡薑湯嚼下, 含化亦得. 《綱目》

Translation

Treats vacuity cold of the lung and stomach, with a long-standing cough that will not stop. Tussilago, ginseng, schisandra, mulberry root bark and aster, 1 nyang each. Grind to a powder and make honey pills the size of a Euryale seed; one pill each time, chewed down with weak ginger decoction, or it may equally be held in the mouth to dissolve. — Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A lozenge, and the instruction 含化 — hold it in the mouth and let it dissolve — is the whole point of the form. For a dry chronic cough a drug that passes slowly over the throat does more than the same drug swallowed, and honey is the vehicle because it coats. Tussilago and aster are the tradition's pair for a cough that has gone on for months, with schisandra to restrain it and ginseng for the patient underneath. 芡實大, the size of a Euryale seed, is a size reference and not an ingredient — about that of a large pea. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
