Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治諸般咳嗽, 及寒嗽ㆍ久嗽. 陳皮ㆍ薄荷ㆍ麻黃ㆍ桂皮ㆍ桑白皮ㆍ紫蘇葉ㆍ杏仁ㆍ大腹皮ㆍ甘草各一錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑五ㆍ梅一箇, 水煎服. 《易簡》

Translation

Treats coughs of every kind, and cold cough and long-standing cough. Tangerine peel, mint, ephedra, cinnamon bark, mulberry root bark, perilla leaf, apricot kernel, areca husk and licorice, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add five slices of ginger and one smoked plum, and decoct in water. — Igan 易簡 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Nine drugs at an equal don, which is what the name counts. A formula with no lead drug is usually a formula for a cough nobody has diagnosed, and the indication says as much — 諸般咳嗽, coughs of every kind. Ephedra, perilla leaf and mint release the surface, apricot kernel and mulberry root bark bring the lung qi down, tangerine peel and areca husk move the qi in the middle, and cinnamon bark warms. The smoked plum at the end is the one thing in it that is not expectorant or dispersing, and in this chapter sour fruit is always for the cough that has gone on too long and dried the throat. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
