Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治便血及諸下血. 厚朴ㆍ生薑各五兩(同搗爛炒黃), 白朮ㆍ神麴ㆍ麥芽ㆍ五味子各一兩(同炒黃). 右爲末, 水糊和丸梧子大, 米飮下百丸. 盖脾胃本無血, 緣氣虛腸薄, 自榮衛滲入而下. 用厚朴厚腸胃, 麥芽消酒食, 白朮導水, 血自不作. 多有奇效. 《入門》

Translation

Treats bloody stool and all bleeding below. Magnolia bark and fresh ginger 5 nyang each, pounded to a pulp together and fried yellow; white atractylodes, medicated leaven, barley sprout and schisandra 1 nyang each, fried yellow together. Powder them, bind with water paste into pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take a hundred down with rice broth. The spleen and stomach have no blood of their own; because the qi is vacuous and the intestines thin, blood seeps in from the construction and defence and goes down. Magnolia bark thickens the intestines and stomach, barley sprout disperses wine and food, white atractylodes conducts water, and the blood ceases to arise of itself. Clinical commentary 臨床

腸薄 — the intestines thin — is the Immun's mechanism, and it is a picture of a gut wall too weak to hold its blood. No stancher in the formula at all: magnolia bark to thicken, barley sprout to clear what irritates, atractylodes to dry. The reasoning that the bowel leaks blood because it is thin rather than because it is hot is the chapter's most original, and the Immun says it has worked often. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
