Red Jade Powder

Hongok-san

한글 홍옥산  ·  Pinyin Hong Yu San

紅玉散

The Bogam carries two formulas of this name. This is the one in the Abscesses chapter — glauberite calcined in salt-clay with a little red lead, dusted on a sore; the other is the Face chapter's wash of the same name, registered as `hongok-san`. The salt-clay is luting for the firing and is not an ingredient. The collation note standing at the foot of leaf 054b, which reads 褁 against the first edition's 裹, annotates the 包褁 of this leaf — the only 褁 on the page — and not the 生肌散 that follows it; the transcription's 褁 is printed and the first edition's 裹 recorded here.

Translation

Treats all sores and raises flesh. Glauberite, any amount, wrapped in salt-clay and calcined in the fire. Powder it, add a little red lead, and dust it on the sore. — Dansim 丹心. ○ For a malignant sore bleeding without stop, glauberite finely powdered and dusted on stops it at once. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs, and really one: glauberite fired inside a jacket of salt and clay until it is friable, ground, and tinted with a pinch of red lead — again the red that gives the powder its name. The second clause drops the lead altogether and uses the calcined mineral alone as a haemostatic dust, which is the more defensible of the two uses: a fine absorbent mineral powder on an oozing surface does slow capillary bleeding by letting clot form in it. 生肌肉, raising flesh, is the stage the chapter places after the dead tissue is gone, and the powders of this group all belong to it. **Contains red lead, which is lead tetroxide and is absorbed from a raw wound surface. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
