Translation

Treats summerheat with drinking in excess leading to vomiting and diarrhoea. Alisma, poria and atractylodes, 2 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and twenty stalks of juncus pith, and decoct in water. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Seo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three drugs in equal measure and the shortest formula in the chapter. The indication is precise and easy to miss: it is not the heat that is being treated but the drinking — a patient who has taken in far more water than he can absorb and is now vomiting it and passing it. The juncus pith is the one addition and leads the water out through the urine. For water intoxication, which happens in heat work and endurance exertion and is still misread as dehydration, draining rather than replacing is the right instinct. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
