Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治暑熱燥渴ㆍ引飮無度, 或水入卽吐. 乃<a href='/formulas/oryeong-san'>五苓散</a>去桂代人參也. 《得效》

Translation

Treats summerheat with parching thirst and drinking without measure, or water being vomited as soon as it goes in. It is Oryeong-san with the cassia removed and ginseng in its place. — Uibang Yuchwi 得效 (Donguibogam · Seo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One drug swapped and the formula changes purpose entirely: take the cassia out of Oryeong-san and put ginseng in, and a warming water-draining prescription becomes a qi-supplementing one. The indication is the striking part — drinking without measure, and the water coming straight back up. That is the paradox the five-ingredient poria formulas were made for: the patient is desperately thirsty and yet cannot hold water, because the fluid is not being taken up but standing in the stomach. Draining it and supporting the qi rather than giving more to drink is the correct answer, and in a heat-stricken patient vomiting everything it remains a reasonable one. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
